Harry was born in 1879 in Brighton. Harry's father was James Skinner Steer and his mother was Fanny Cheeseman.  His paternal grandfather is <Unknown> and his paternal grandmother was Mary Ann Steer. He had two brothers and a sister, named Walter, Charles and Fanny.  He was the oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother named Alfred.
