Fred was born in 1868 in Petworth and his baptism took place there on May 29th, 1868.¹²

Fred's father was Edwin Steer and his mother was Mary Ann Spooner. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Sarah steer. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William, Albert, Elizabeth, Emma, Sarah, Mary and Harriot. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 6 on June 1st, 1874 in Petworth.³
