Emily was born in 1872 in Lambeth, Surrey.1  Emily's father was William Henry Steer and her mother was Emily Vincent.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Charlotte Miller. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Edwin, Reginald, Arthur, Herbert, Gertrude, Agnes, Edith and May.  She was the oldest of the ten children.
