Eliza was born in 1864 in Macclesfield, Cheshire.1  Eliza's father was William Steer and her mother was Julia.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. She had three brothers and a sister, named George, Tom, Walter and Hariet.  She was the fourth oldest of the five children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named William, Agnes, Annie and Nellie.
