Edward was born in 1818 and his baptism took place on February 15th, 1818 in Petworth.1  Edward's father was William Steer and his mother was Elizabeth Howick.  His paternal grandfather is Thomas Steer and his paternal grandmother was Jane Osborn. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, James, Henry, Robert, George, Charles, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane.  He was the tenth oldest of the eleven children.
