Edith was born in 1873 in Macclesfield, Cheshire.1  Edith's father was Robert Steer and her mother was Jane.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith. She had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Mary and Elizabeth.  She was the third oldest of the four children.
