Edith was born in 1883 in Battersea, Surrey.1   Edith's father was William Henry Steer and her mother was Emily Vincent.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Charlotte Miller. She had five brothers and four sisters, named Henry, Edwin, Reginald, Arthur, Herbert, Emily, Gertrude, Agnes and May.  She was the eighth oldest of the ten children.
