Bessie was born in 1874 in Midhurst, sussex and her baptism took place on November 29th, 1874 in Midhurst.1 2  Bessie's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Harriett Ward. She had five brothers and six sisters, named George, Thomas, Charlie, Joseph, Alfred, Kate, Lydia, Bessie, Annie, Lydia and Harty.
