Anne was born in 1857 in Petworth and her baptism took place there on January 25th, 1857.1 2  Anne's father was Thomas Steer and her mother was Jane Hunt.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Steer and Jane Smith; her maternal grandparents were James Hunt and Lucy. She had five brothers and a sister, named George, James, William, Thomas, Percy and Emma.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
