Ann was born in 1877 in Itchingfield, Sussex.1  Ann's father was George Steer and her mother was Hannah Farley. She had five brothers and two sisters, named George, William, Henry, James, Alfred, Jane and Alice.  She was the sixth oldest of the eight children.
