Alfred was born in 1849 and his baptism took place on October 19th, 1849 in Petworth.1  Alfred's father was Thomas Steer and his mother was Charlotte Miller.  His paternal grandparents were William Steer and Anne Merriott; his maternal grandparents were Henry Miller and Rhoda. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Charles, William, George, Mary and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died in 1849 in Petworth.  His burial was on November 4th, 1849 in Petworth.2 3
