John's father was John Wild and his mother was Hannah Dodgson (of Thorner).  His maternal grandparents were Matthew Dodgson (of Shadwell & Tadcaster) and Eleanor Thompson. He had six brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Samuel, George, Charles, Frederick, Anne, Eliza and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the ten children. He had a half-sister named Ellen.
