Walter was born in 1871 in Preston.1   Walter's father was Alfred Walker and his mother was Ann Whittle.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Walker and Hannah Waterhouse. He had a brother and four sisters, named Samuel, Violet, Maria, Annie and Edith.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
