John was born in 1836 in Plymouth, Devon.1  John's father was John Vivian (of Salcombe) and his mother was Elizabeth Davey. He had three brothers and three sisters, named William, Charles, Edwin, Elizabeth, Mary and Celia.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
