Edwin was born in 1848 in Plymouth, Devon.1  Edwin's father was John Vivian (of Salcombe) and his mother was Elizabeth Davey. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Charles, Elizabeth, Mary and Celia.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
