Charles was born in 1839 in Plymouth, Devon.1  Charles' father was John Vivian (of Salcombe) and his mother was Elizabeth Davey. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Edwin, Elizabeth, Mary and Celia.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.
