John was born in 1781 and his baptism took place on March 11th, 1781 in St Matthew`s Church, Hayfield.1  John's father was George Turner and his mother was Mary Bradbury.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Turner and Leah. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Joseph, Edward, William, Hannah and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six children.
