Duncan was born on December 13th, 1821 in Luss.  Duncan's father was Charles Sinclair and his mother was Janet McFarlan.  His paternal grandparents were Duncan Sinclair and Katherine Ferguson. He had a brother and three sisters, named Malcolm, Catharine, Mary and Janet.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-brother named Robert.
