John's father was William Simpson and his mother was Rebekah Rack.  His paternal grandparents were William Simpson and Rachel; his maternal grandparents were William Rack (of Brocklesby) and Sarah Mumby (of Keelby). He had three brothers and five sisters, named George, James, George, Rachel, Sarah, Rebecca, Diana and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Thomas.
