John was born in February 1830 in Drainie, Moray, Scotland.1  John's father was William Simpson and his mother was Rebekah Rack.  His paternal grandparents were William Simpson and Rachel; his maternal grandfather was William Rack (of Brocklesby). He had three brothers and five sisters, named GEORGE, JAMES, George, Rachel, Sarah, Rebecca, Diana and Jane.  He was the second youngest of the nine children. He had a half-brother named Thomas.
