Jane's father was William Simpson and her mother was Rebekah Rack.  Her paternal grandparents were William Simpson and Rachel; her maternal grandparents were William Rack (of Brocklesby) and Sarah Mumby (of Keelby). She had four brothers and four sisters, named George, James, John, George, Rachel, Sarah, Rebecca and Diana.  She was the third youngest of the nine children. She had a half-brother named Thomas.
