John's father was John Rollison and his mother was Ann Milner.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Rollisson and Mary Ustler; his maternal grandparents were John Milner and Elizabeth Standerell. He had two brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, William, Sarah, Ann, Rachel, Mary, Elizabeth and Grace.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
