Joan's father was Thomas Mitchell and her mother was Mary Usher.  Her paternal grandparents were Charles Mitchel and Elizabeth; her maternal grandparents were William Usher and Mary Alworth. She had three sisters named Mary, Jane and Ann.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Job, Daniel, Emanuel, Anna, Eleanor, Eliza and Eliza.
