Thomas' father was John Letts and his mother was Mary Ann Lowes.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Letts and Sarah Buckland. He had three brothers and three sisters, named John, George, Henry, Mary, Anne and Emily.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
