Martha's father was George Cruickshank Kynoch and her mother was Martha Horsman. Her maternal grandparents were Edward Horsman and Ann Staniland. She had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Elizabeth. She was the oldest of the three children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Thomas and Annie.
