Maria was born in 1842 in Denham.¹

Maria's father was Thomas Kedge and her mother was Charlotte Chandler. Her paternal grandparents were Anthony Kedge and Amelia Seymour. She had six brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, George, John, William, Joseph, Anthony, Amelia, Jane, Harriet and Charlotte. She was the oldest of the eleven children.
