Rachel was born in 1832 in Leeds, Yorkshire and her baptism took place on April 7th, 1833 in Saint Peter, Leeds.1 2  Rachel's father was John Hemingway and her mother was Ellen Marshall.  Her maternal grandparents were John Marshall and Sophia Senier. She had two brothers and five sisters, named William, Isaac, Ann, Elizabeth, Ellen, Sophia and Mary.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
