Thomas' father was Robert Darney and his mother was Elinor (Elene Eline Helene) Durswell. He had four sisters named Elisabethe, Johane, Marie and Catherine.  He was the second youngest of the five children. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Arthur, Sarah and Rebecca.
