George Rodney

  • Sir John Rodney, Knt. (b. 1471, d. 20 Aug.,1527) & his wife, Anne Crofts, dau. of Sir James Crofts, Knt., had a second son:-
    
    George Rodney, (Lord of the Manors of Over-Badgworth & Congresbury) (d.1586) married Elizabeth Kirton of Cheddar (who was the daughter of Thomas Kirton, of Wiltshire & Somerset; this Thomas Kirton was the only son of Richard(1) Kirton, third son of Stephen Kirton of Wooton, co. Wilts. (Visitation of London 1568).
    
    George Rodney and his wife, Elizabeth (nee Kirton) had one son and four daughters:-
    Sir John Rodney, Kt. (b. c. 1550) married Jane Seymour, dau. of Sir Henry Seymour (brother of Edward, Duke of Somerset, and of Queen Jane Seymour). This John Rodney began as a scholar at Corpus Christi College, Oxford; then married, and he and Jane,   "a very wise and provident woman" (ibid,p.101), had a total of 17 children, seven of which survived to adulthood. He had purchased a farm at Cheddar, but in 1589, following the deaths of all the sons of the senior Rodney line, John inherited all the properties of the senior line, and was knighted by King James I in London, 1603. (ibid, Brydges, p.559 - 560) Their second, surviving daughter was also named Elizabeth Rodney, whose younger brother, Edward, (later Sir Edward), became his father's heir.
