John de KIRKETON

  • I am fairly certain that the Alan(1) who was left lands at Ford End, part of Biddenham, co. Beds., by Walter de Kirketon, his cousin, circa 1345, and who also inherited the coat of arms, "Argent, a fess and a chevron in chief, Gules" from Walter, which had originally belonged to their common ancestor, Gilbert(1) de Kirketon, the lawyer, who went from Screveton, co. Notts. up to Westmorland in 1228, was the eldest son of a John de Kirketon of Kirketon-in-Holland, who probably lived from about 1280 to about 1330. I have one source which I believe refers to him, which I do not believe that you have seen as yet.  It is possible that the Cecily, from the 1316 Cal. of Charter Rolls, p. 328, who you suggest was Alan(1)'s mother, may indeed have been so, but I have still not finished checking this out from my many source references yet. If it is so, then Cecily by 1316 was presumably the relict or widow of the John de Kirketon who I suspect was Alan(1)'s father, but I am not sure yet. And there are at least two other Alans in the time span to complicate the issue.
