    From what I have been able to find out the very earliest individual  who during his lifetime began to use "de Kirketon" as a surname was  CONAN de KIRKETON, of Kirketon-in-Haylaund, co. Lincs.; he was the  son of a ROBERT of the same place, and had an eldest son and heir  also named ROBERT. I estimate that Conan was born circa 1150, and was  an adult and active by 1183. There are no further records of him  after 1220, so I believe by that date he had died. During his  lifetime he was a frequent witness on documents, and was almost  certainly an early justice of the Assizes. {Source references: PRO:  No. 3 ANC 2/1, MS of the Earl of Ancaster, folios 10vo, 42/3; 15vo,  65/3; 27, 115/2 & 118; 28, 118, 119 & 121. "Lincolnshire Assize  Rolls, A.D. 1202-1209". pps. 21, 88, 188.) (I have found no record of  his wife's name) I believe that he had at least three sons, as follows:  1. ROBERT(2) de KIRKETON, born circa 1173, adult and active by 1194.  Held the Manor of Kirketon at Kirketon-in-Haylaund (aka. Holland) (Source refs. PRO: No. 3 ANC 2/1, ibid. folios 8/23 of 15 Sept.,  1194, a witness; c.1220: folio 28vo, 122; folio 29,126; 29vo, 128;  folio 31,136; Calendar of Patent Rolls, Henry III, Vol. 1, p.79: Safe  Conduct from the king, 5 May, 1217) ROBERT de KIRKETON married  MARGERIA de BOZON, (variously spelt: Boson, Boum, Bosom, Bozonn,  etc.) of Bozon Hall, at Kirketon-in-Haylaund, Wapentake of Kirketon,  co. Lincs. (source ref.: Society of Genealogists, London, V. I. C.  Smith MSS, Vol.36, p. 50)(it appears that Margeria was an heiress, as  it appears that Robert after the marriage came into possession of  Bozon Hall. (The remains of Bozon Hall are evidently still in  existence on Wash Road in modern Kirton; it was evidently a fortified  house with towers at each end, and a moat. The moat has now been  drained and the building is being used by a manufacturer of wood  moldings, with whom I have been in touch.) I believe that Robert and  Margeria had at least two sons, Alexander and Peter.    (I told you  that I had recently ordered some copies of charters and rolls from  the British Library, which have not yet arrived. One of these was the  charter for the Manor of Kirketon-in-Haylaund from 1245 (I think). It  will be very interesting to find out who held it at that time. I  already know that about 75 years later it was held by Sir John de  Kirketon, Knight (K.B.), and I am trying to work out what happened in  between.)
