    The demesne, including mansion and park, was let to the Kirton family, possibly by the mid 16th  century. The
    house was occupied by Lettice (d. 1620), widow of Edward Kirton, and mother of Sir James Kirton, recorder
    of Wells (d. 1620) who died shortly before her. Under Sir James’s will it passed to his nephew Edward Kirton
    (d. c. 1655), son of Daniel

    but was occupied by another nephew, James Kirton, son of William, and in 1639
    by James’s estranged wife Joan. James, a Royalist captain, had his estate sequestrated 1645 and was said
    to be ‘distracted’.
