John was born in 1901.  John's father was James HICKSON and his mother was Mary Gough.  His paternal grandparents were William abt 1837 HICKSON and Elizabeth Dale; his maternal grandparents were Thomas GOFF and Jane Shaw. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, Cyril, Thomas, George and Jane.  He was the fourth oldest of the six children.
