Veranza was born in 1958. Veranza's father was Hendrik (Hennie) Winterbach and her mother is Verna Elizabeth Marais. Her paternal grandparents were Tobias Johannes Winterbach and Susanna Philippina Louw. She has two brothers and a sister, named Tobias, Hendrik and Solinde. She is the second oldest of the four children.
