Franja was born in 1851.  Franja's father was Johann Janko Potz and her mother was Ana Karlić.  Her paternal grandparents were Johann Janko Potz and Stanka (Potz); her maternal grandparents were Paulus Karlić and Helena Stanić. She had five sisters named Mariči, Hana, Anka, Adela and Kristina.  She was the second oldest of the six children. She had a half-sister named Emilija.
