James was born in 1866 in Cumberworth, Yorkshire. James' father was Joseph WHITAKER and his mother was Harriot.  His paternal grandmother was Elizabeth WHITAKER. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, Elijah, John, Mary, Ellen and Hannah.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
