Elijah was born in 1862 in Gilthwaites, Yorkshire. Elijah's father was Joseph WHITAKER and his mother was Harriot.  His paternal grandmother was Elizabeth WHITAKER. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Joseph, James, John, Mary, Ellen and Hannah.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
