John's father was John Horatio Nickson and his mother was Ann (Anne) C A Clayton. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Clayton and Elizabeth Allmon. He had two brothers named Thomas and Joseph. He was the oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, Arthur and Ann. He died at the age of 45 in 1895 in Sydney, NSW.

Death Notes
- NSW Death Cert No. 7081/1895 states that in 1895, John H NICKSON died in Sydney NSW. his father was John H NICKSON and his mother was Annie NICKSON (nee Clayton).
