Thomas' father was Thomas Heratio Matterson and his mother was Louisa Harriett Smith. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Neales C Matterson and Elizabeth Clayton. He was an only child. He died at the age of 80 on February 3rd, 1972 in Burwood, NSW.¹

- NSW Death Cert No. 44109/1972 states that, in 1972, Thomas Neales MATTERSON died in the district of Burwood NSW. His parents were Thomas Heratio and Louisa Harriett MATTERSON (nee SMITH).
