- NSW Birth Cert No.2932/1862 states that, in 1862, Joseph B MATTERSON was born in Chippendale, Sydney. His father's name was Thomas N MATTERSON and his mother's name was Elizabeth MATTERSON (nee Clayton).

Joseph's father was Thomas Neales C Matterson and his mother was Elizabeth Clayton. His maternal grandparents were Joseph Clayton and Elizabeth Allmon. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Charles, George, Anna, Julia, Sarah and Harriet. He was the fourth youngest of the eight children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Mary. He died at the age of 75 in 1937 in Sydney, NSW.¹
