Ann's father was Michael Griffin and her mother was Mary Amos. Her maternal grandparents were Gabriel Amos and Anne Smith. She had two brothers and a sister, named Nathanial, Thomas and Lyndia. She was the oldest of the four children. She died at the age of 80 on August 5th, 1864 in Elizabeth St, Paddington NSW. She was buried on August 7th, 1864 in Devonshire Street (Central) Cemetery, Sydney NSW.³¹

In the matter of the death of Isabella JOHNSON (defacto wife of Samuel STEVENS), Samuel and Hannah HOWARD lived together as man and wife after the death of Isabella JOHNSON. Records show that Hannah HOWARD was at the house when the Isabella was found dead and that Ann BATES was called to assist.
