William was born on August 4th, 1808 in England and his christening took place on August 21st, 1808 in St Giles, Camberwell, Surrey, England.1  William's father was Amaziah John Green and his mother was Mary Ann Chapel.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Green and Betty Matthewman. He had three brothers and five sisters, named George, Henry, Thomas, Mary, Maria, Sarah, Charlotte and Georgina.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
