Maria was born on July 30th, 1809 in Doncaster England and her christening took place there on January 13th, 1811. Maria's father was Joseph Clayton and her mother was Harriot Timms. She had two sisters named Matilda and Caroline.  She was the oldest of the three children. She had four half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Joseph, George, Thomas, James, Anne and Elizabeth.
