Joseph's father was Joseph Richard Clayton and his mother was Mary Ann(e) Hayes. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Clayton and Elizabeth Allmon. He had two brothers and nine sisters, named John, Horatio, Elizabeth, Emily, Julia, Alice, Frances, Mary, Ada, Edith and Louisa. He was the second oldest of the twelve children. He had a half-brother named Joseph. He died at the age of 72 in 1925.
