    "MR. J. H. CLAYTON.
    The death took place at his residence, Myee, Forest-road, Arncliffe on Monday, of Mr. John Horatio Clayton. Born In 1855, a son of the late Joseph Richard Clayton (an old Pyrmont resident, and one-time treasurer of the City of Sydney), Mr. Clayton was educated at Fort street School and the Sydney Grammar School. He early took to law, succeeding to the practice of the Hon. Richard Driver, and practicing for about 45 years. Mr. Clayton was a president of the Sydney Cricket Ground for many years, and vice-president of the Metropolitan Rugby Union until that body ceased to exist, president of the New South Wales Junior Cricket Association, and honorary secretary of the Sydney Grammar School Old Boys' Union. He was a member of the old Osborne cricket team, and the McQuade Cup, won by the team, is still in possession of the family. Mr. Clayton was also Mayor and alderman of Rockdale for many years. He is survived by two sons and four daughters, namely Mr. H. J. R. Clayton, solicitor; Dr. H. J. Clayton, of Macquarie, and formerly superintendent of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; Mrs. J. L. Hudson, of Hobart; Mrs. T. V. Nicholls, of Emerald Vale, Yetman; and two unmarried daughters."

    "LATE MR. J. H. CLAYTON.

    A large number of people gathered at the funeral of Mr. J. H. Clayton yesterday.
    A short service was held in Christ Church, Bexley, where the Rev. R. L. Houston, who also officiated at the graveside, paid a tribute to Mr. Clayton's character and past services.
    The chief mourners were Mrs. J. H. Clayton (wife of the deceased), Mr. J. Clayton (brother), Dr. Harry J. Clayton and Hector Clayton (sons), Miss Millie Clayton (daughter), Messrs. G. F. Windon, T. Henderson, and J. R. Henderson (brothers-in-law), Mrs. T. Henderson (sister), Messrs. H. C. Windon and B. G. Windon (nephews), Messrs. C. H. Matterson, G. A. Matterson, Niels Matterson, and T. H. Matterson (cousins).
    Others who were present included Messrs. C. J. Farleigh, M.L.C., G. A. Dunbar (managing director of the Pepsodent Co., Ltd.), G. H. Patterson, (Catts-Patterson Co., Ltd.), A. E. Hickey (Hickey and Sons), R. McEvoy (McEvoy and Sons), C. R. Walsh (late prothonotary of the Supreme Court), and J. C. Davis ("Referee.")
    Messrs. F. Iredale (secretary), A. W. Green and W. R. Jones (vice-presidents) represented the New South Wales Cricket Association. The executive committee was represented by Messrs. Syd. Smith (chairman), W. P. McElhone, R. A. Oxlade, E. A. Tyler, T. Howard, and W. C. Bull. Others were Messrs. A. Lucas (New South Wales Umpires' Association), J. Searle, T. J. E. Andrews. H. D. Wood (president of the New South Wales Rugby Union), Dr. Eric Fisher (president of the University Football Club), W. G. Judd and H. Judd, Alderman W. Dibble (Mayor of Newtown), and W. G. Salmon, J.P.     "ROCKDALE COUNCIL.

    RETIREMENT OF ALDERMAN CLAYTON. 
    At Thursday night's meeting of the Rockdale Council the Mayor (Alderman Tregarthan), who presided, referred to the retirement from the council of Alderman J. Clayton. He spoke in eulogistic terms of the services rendered to the council by Alderman Clayton during the 12 years that he had been acting as municipal representative, three years of which period he had filled the Mayoral chair.   The Mayor also pointed out that it was largely due to Alderman Clayton's energy that the   borough was in its present sound financial condition. Six years ago, he said, the council had a debt of £18,500, for which interest was being paid at the rate of 6 and 7 per cent. The debt had now been reduced to £15,000 and the interest each   year amounted to about £600, instead of £1166 as heretofore. The borough's debts had been consolidated, and arrangements made to pay off so much of the principal each year. Certain arrears at the bank also had been wiped off. 
    On the motion of the Mayor, seconded by Alderman W. Taylor, it was decided to take steps to publicly recognise the services that Alderman     Clayton had rendered to the borough during the past 12 years.
    The council clerk (Mr, Henwood) was appointed hon. secretary to the movement. It was also resolved to call a public meeting of the ratepayers to further the object in view."
