Henry's father was John Horatio Clayton and his mother was Isabella Woodward. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Richard Clayton and Mary Ann(e) Hayes. He had a brother and four sisters, named Hector, Daisy, Millie, Linda and Gladys. He died by commiting suicide, Asphyxia following on strangulation, wilfully caused by himself.asphyxia following on strangulation, wilfully caused by himself., at the age of 41 on October 31st, 1928 in Bulli Hospital, Thirroul NSW. The funeral took place on November 2nd, 1928 in Wood Coffill's Chapel. 810 George-street, Sydney, NSW and was arranged by Wood Coffill Ltd. He was buried on November 2nd, 1928 in CofE Woronora Cemetery, Sutherland, NSW.¹²

  DEATH AT BULLI
  The death occurred at the Bulli Hospital yesterday of Dr. H. J. Clayton, a prominent consulting physician In Macquarie Street, and a former medical superintendent of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He had been suffering from a severe nervous breakdown for some months, and recently went to a private residence at Bulli to recuperate. He was removed to the hospital from Thirroul yesterday morning.
  The late Dr. Clayton had a brilliant career. Born in Sydney 41 years ago, he was educated at the Sydney Grammar School, He was a prominent footballer and athlete during his University career, and graduated M.B., Ch.M., in 1911. Dr. Clayton was appointed Junior resident medical officer at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1912, and rose very quickly, being appointed medical superintendent in 1914.
  Shortly after the outbreak of war he left with the 2nd Australian General Hospital, under the late Colonel Morgan Martin with the rank of captain. On Gallipoli he was with the 4th Field Ambulance, and remained there until the evacuation.
  Dr. Clayton was recalled to Sydney by the late Sir Thomas Anderson Stuart, chairman of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. This action was deemed necessary, because to- wards the end of 1915 it was considered that the hospital was beginning to suffer from the frequent changes in its medical and nursing staffs. Dr. Clayton resumed the position of superintendent in 1916. He was a very capable administrator and an outstanding organiser. Many reforms in the hospital were due to him.
  Finding that the continuous strain of the work at the hospital was affecting his health. Dr. Clayton resigned in 1920. Dr. Clayton is survived by Mrs Clayton, who was formerly Miss Buckland, daughter of Mr. Arthur Buckland, a well-known New South Wales grazier. There are no children. The body will be brought to Sydney to-morrow.”

  DR. H. J. CLAYTON.
  The funeral of Dr. Harry John Clayton, formerly Medical Superintendent of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, took place yesterday at the Church of England Cemetery, Woronora. Prior to the funeral a short service was conducted at Wood Coffill's mortuary chapel, George-street, by the Rev. Canon W. L. Langley, who also officiated at the graveside.
  The chief mourners were Mr. J. Clayton (uncle), Mr. T. V. Nicholls (brother-in-law), and Mr. W. A. Buckland (father-in-law). The Australian Lodge of Harmony (United Grand Lodge of New South Wales) was represented by Dr. G. C. Byrne, W.M., and Mr. G. G. Macintosh (secretary), the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital by Dr. C. Purser (chairman of the hospital board), Mr. W. Epps (secretary), and Mr. C. K. Provert; the University of Sydney by Prof. A. E. Mills (professor of medicine), and the Sydney Grammar School and the Old Sydneians' Union by Mr. Hyam Marks.

  "DOCTOR'S DEATH.

  DUE TO STRANGULATION.
  BULLI, Tuesday.
  An inquest concerning the death of Dr. H. J. Clayton was held in the Bulli Courthouse to-day by Mr. A. E. Chapman, Stipendiary Magistrate.
  Evidence was given that the body was found in the laundry of a house at Thirroul by a nurse, under whose charge Dr. Clayton had been. Part of a flexible electric cord was around his neck, the other part being attached to a rafter of the laundry. A chair was lying by the side of the body under the rafter on which the cord was fastened. Dr. Clayton had been in Thirroul for 10 weeks, suffering from nervous depression.
  The verdict was that deceased died from asphyxia following on strangulation, wilfully caused by himself.
  A note was found on the copper of the laundry by Constable Dawes, addressed to the nurse, thanking her for all that she had done for him. A note was also left for his wife, stating that he would never get better from his present illness, and that this was the only way out."
