Alfred's father was Joseph Edward Clayton and his mother was Sarah Jane Eggleton. His paternal grandparents were James Clayton and Jane Raper. He had a brother named William. He was the younger of the two children. He died at the age of 70 in 1949 in Newtown area, NSW.¹
