Ann was born on May 2nd, 1817 in Sydney, NSW and her baptism took place on May 25th, 1817 in St Philips CofE Church Sydney NSW.1   Ann's father was Thomas Bates and her mother was Ann Griffin.  Her paternal grandmother was Mary Ann Bates; her maternal grandparents were Michael Griffin and Mary Amos. She had three brothers and four sisters, named William, James, Nathaniel, Lydia, Maria, Martha and Sarah.  She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.  She died at the age of 83 on January 10th, 1901 in Chippendale, Sydney, NSW.  She was buried on January 12th, 1901 in Rookwood Cemetery, NSW.2 1
