John was born in 1906. John's father was John Joseph McEvoy and his mother was Ellen Agnes Maher.  His paternal grandparents were George McEvoy and Mary Campbell; his maternal grandparents were Daniel Maher and Mary Gorey. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Anges and Elizabeth (Betty).  He was the oldest of the four children.
