      The pleasing news is to hand that Dr. Leslie Halberstater, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Halberstater, Dee-street, has been appointed to the position of medical officer to the Townsville General Hospital. Dr. Halberstater is a local man, he received his primary education in the town and later went to college to study for his profession. A short time ago he acted as locum tenens for Dr. O'Hara at the local General Hospital. The doctor is to be congratulated on his appointment to such a responsible position."

      "NORTHLANDER: LES HALBERSTATER HOPED TO STAY NORTH TWO YEARS
      Townsville's Turf Club president and a leading member of the city's medical profession, Dr. Leslie Halberstater, as a young doctor intended to spend two years in the North, but has stayed for 26.
      The name, 'Les' Halberstater, is as widely known on northern racecourses as it is among those who owe their life to his skill as a medical man. He is a former Australian University representative footballer, is a long standing Turf Club committeeman, the city's Government Medical Officer, President of the Christian Brothers' Old Boys' Association and head of the New Mater Hospital Appeal.
      Leslie Halberstater was born at Mount Morgan in 1901, the son of a butcher with grazing interests. He received his early education at the Mount Morgan High School and later at St. Joseph's College, Nudgee. He won an open scholar- ship in 1919 and went to his first year's medical school at the Queensland University. In 1925, he graduated from the Sydney University with the title of Bachelor of Medicine and Master of Surgery. From the Brisbane General Hospital, he came to the Townsville General Hospital as medical superintendent In 1928. It was the beginning of 26 years residence in the north. His reason? "Only that I became a northerner," Dr. Halberstater says.
      Dr. Halberstater inherited his racing interests from his father who raced such formerly well-known horses as Master II, The Baron and San Donyx in the early days of North Queensland turf. Roseglade (Passing Glance — Tralet Rose) has been the doctor's most successful horse. Between 1943 and 1944 she won eight out of 12 starts in the north. She was bred by himself. Another outstanding galloper was Falcon King which won the Cleveland Bay Handicap in 1944. He still holds Stephano and Philemon in high regard. Better known to present day Townsville racegoers is Blue Ink whose last success was the Boxing Day Handicap at Cluden.
      In 1924, Dr. Halberstater toured New Zealand with the Combined Australian University team. Until a few years ago, he took an active interest in the administrative work of the Past Brothers' Football Club. One of the doctor's most absorbing interests to-day Is the New Mater Hospital Appeal which he is confident will emerge shortly as an impressive institution for the benefit of the whole of North Queensland.”
