Sarah Ellen WYNNE

  • Sarah Ellin Wynne B. 1841 TO 1843 censuses vary. The first census I found [1881] regarding Sarah showed her to have been born in Swansea, Subsequently this turned out to be incorrect as we see she was infact born in Holywell Flintshire. However she spent most of her childhood in Swansea. By the time she was 20yrs old [1861 census] she is described as a Pupil Teacher and obviously doing well. By 1864, things had perhaps started to go not so well, she had a daughter Elizabeth Ellen who kept the Wynne surname, thus probably illegitimate, did this event cause Sarah to move to Cambridgeshire. There was a family of Winn’s [not Wynne’s] living at Great Gransden, not far from where we next here of Sarah. The Great Gransden Winn’s had a Daughter Sarah Ellen also, and for a time I was convinced that she was ‘our’ Sarah. Could these have been relatives of the Welsh Wynn’s and gave Sarah refuge? While living in Cambridgeshire [see map] Sarah gave birth to her son Fredrick in 1866. Both Elizabeth and Frederick were baptised the same day on 6th March 1866 at Orwell and were given the surname of Barlow. The father was registered as John Barlow a carpenter. This information I obtained from Mrs Rose Parkin who keeps the Orwell Parish Records and was extremely helpful. I cannot find any reference for Sarah in the 1871 census but we do find Elizabeth and Frederick Barlow [with correct ages and birth places] as inmates at the Clifton Union Workhouse in Gloustershire. This appears to be more of an orphanage as nearly all the inmates are children, there is no mention of Sarah. Where Sarah was or why the children ended up in the workhouse we will probably never know Three years later,in, 1873 Sarah is now living with Frederick Wagstaff [They are to become my Great grandparents] in Doncaster. We know this because their first child [my Grandfather] Charles Edward is born in Doncaster in January 1874. The 1881 census shows that Frederick Barlow had obviously gone with his mother to Doncaster. Unfortunately I have been unable to find any further record of Elizabeth, did she die or hopefully perhaps she was adopted It could be Elizabeth went to Doncaster as well, but by the time the 1881 census came round she was now 18yrs old and had moved away. According to the 1881,1891,and the 1901 census Frederick and Sarah appear to have four other children, other than Charles Edward and Margaret, the two that we only thought they had. I have the original written copies of the census and they are definitely there. 1881 Frank aged 1 b.1880. 1891 Frank aged 11 Watkin Wynne aged 9 b1882 Harry aged 6 b.1875 Walter aged 3 b.1888 1901 No Sarah Barrie [Prob Harry] 15yrs Watkin 19yrs[ actually says 79 yrs.] What became of these boys I have no clue as yet . From information obtained at BMD we can see that Sarah died in December 1892,at the young age of 52 years.
